Does your dry cleaner work on your car?

I am currently reading "Deluxe; how luxury lost its luster". it has definitely made me think much deeper about certain things, im sure most of which i will write about here. the first thing i want to talk about is something that i've always instinctively disliked, but admittedly never really gave much thought.
What im talking about is specialists. I've always been drawn to them. couldnt tell you why. i always, both in times of need & in plenty, rely on specialists. i have standing appointments with my hair stylist, esthetician & manicurist. and when asked why i cant do any of this myself (which i am constantly asked, especially about my hair since "its just one color, i can do that for you") i always reply "do you work on your own car? no? same difference". when i want something done right, i go to a professional. makes sense right?
so, now i come to my point. why has it become a trend for brands to be everything to everyone? do you really want your shoes, clothes, cosmetics, perfume & skincare to come from the same company? i dont. i look around my apartment and i see that my perfume is from a company that only makes perfume. my skincare comes from a skincare company. my makeup comes from a company that only makes cosmetics. again, this is just how ive always been, but now that i think about it, why would you want it the other way? do you really want Chanel lipstick just because its from Chanel? Coco didnt set out to make lipstick, that wasnt her thing. Chanel licenses out their name to a cosmetic company to make money & have their name on more products. so when you buy these licensed products, what you're getting is something that the company doesnt even care enough about to make itself. kinda interesting once you think about it, huh?
so, whats my point? my point is, dont buy that stuff. buy stuff that is made by professionals, professionals in the same profession as the product they are selling. even better? try to find professionals that make their product out of sheer love for whatever it is they are making. trust me, try it, you'll like it. and if enough people do it, then companies will stop trying to take over the world, and just make what they are good at making. novel idea.
